Parent and Family Weekly Update 

October 14 -  October 18 2024

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! 

I hope that you enjoy the upcoming long weekend, and this special season of sunshine, fall leaves, and giving thanks. 

School will be back in session on Tuesday September 15, with early dismissal days on Wednesday and Thursday, with dismissal at 1:35pm. All busses will be running one hour early. Teachers will be emailing their classroom families with details pertaining to the upcoming open house / parent invitations on Wednesday and/or Thursday.

Grade 4 FSAs will begin on Thursday October 17. Information on that including schedule and FSA parent newsletter was sent out to grade 4 families earlier in September. Please reach out if you have any questions!

This past week was a busy one! Some highlights from the week included school photos, and a special visit from Superintendent Smilie! The first day of hot lunch was a HUGE hit thanks to our parent volunteers and their amazing pancakes and sausages. 

This week’s newsletter features some beautiful artwork from the Grade 1 /2 class. I will feature more of our student’s artwork in the weeks to come. It’s so special to be able to showcase our students as much as possible!! 

Announcements for Parents

If your child is sick or starting to feel sick, please keep them at home until their symptoms clear  before returning to school. Thank you! 😊

Announcements for Students

• Reminder that the forts in the forest belong to everyone! All students are allowed into any fort they please. 

• When in the forest for recess, please remain in the RED DOT boundaries. 

• Please get a GOLDEN TICKET from your teacher if you need to visit the office area for any reason. Students without Golden Ticket will be sent back to class. 

• Remember to get your bus pass before the end of the day! 

Still Out There: 

• On October 16, all classrooms will be hosting parent open house events! Your child’s teacher will reach out to you directly in the coming weeks with an invitation and details of this event. School dismissal will be at 1:35 pm on October 16^th and October 17^th. On October 17^th, teachers will be in contact with families who were not able to attend their parent event on the 16^th.

• We are collecting nonperishable food donations for the Nelson Community Food Center! You can bring your donations to the office.

  • AP 2303 : Volunteers
  • If you are attending class trips or are a parent volunteer in another capacity, please complete the requirements found on the website and turn forms into the school office. Thank you! (Forms must be completed in full in order to have the application accepted).
  • All Parent Volunteer Packages and Criminal Record Checks (CRC) must be completed ANNUALLY.
  • If you volunteer at two schools, only one Application and CRC needs to be completed for both. 
• Reminder to parents to please pack a healthy lunch and snack for your child as well as a water bottle. 
• Student fees are $40 per student and can be paid online at: https://bkes.sd8.bc.ca/pay or in person at the office. Online is preferred. 
• Student forms went home with students and are now overdue. Please turn into office if you haven’t yet. 
• Student Accident Optional Insurance coverage 
  
  • Did you know . . .As a parent or guardian, you are responsible for expenses for student injuries that happen on school grounds or during school activities?

• When you contact the School office via phone or email, or send a note with your child, please be as detailed as possible and include:

  • Name of bus route (if applicable)

  • If you have arranged an alternate pickup arrangement for the day, please let your child’s teacher know. 
• Please remind your child to keep their cell phone or other device either at home or zipped up in their backpack for the duration of the school day. Please see the bottom of page 2/ top of page 3 of the Brent Kennedy Elementary School Code of Conduct for more information on cell phones at school.
