June is a month when students, families, staff, the Board of Education and SD8 education partners mark many important, profound and life-changing events.

Elementary schools host welcome-to-kindergarten events for their youngest in-coming students about to begin their education journey. High schools begin graduation ceremonies for grade 12 students the second week of June with families, friends, teachers, and entire communities sharing in celebration of this milestone.

In June, SD8 also celebrates Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, preceded by the annual SD8 Youth Pow Wow. The Pow Wow has been part of the district’s spring traditions for thirteen years. This year’s theme was “Strong Roots, Rising Youth” and the Pow Wow was a beautiful and profound celebration of Indigenous culture attended by students of all ages across SD8.

Throughout May, schools continued to show their commitment to climate action and sustainability at Redfish Elementary; to creativity, digital literacy and career development at Mount Sentinel Secondary, to physical literacy at Canyon-Lister Elementary, and to regular literacy at Winlaw Elementary and South Nelson Elementary, to name a few examples.

And, finally, late spring has brought a moving and wonderful tribute to a grade 12 student whose life has led to a legacy for students graduating from L.V. Rogers Secondary.

I hope you enjoy this June issue of the Superintendent’s Report. I thank you for supporting children to learn and be well, and I wish you all a wonderful, safe, and relaxing summer.

Warmly,

Trish
