Superintendent's Report - November 2026
Welcome to November. This past month has seen Erickson Elementary learn about Indigenous perspectives on gratitude and giving thanks. This and other reflections continue with remembrance of Indigenous veterans on November 8 and of all veterans on November 11.
November is also the last month of cross country running across SD8. Congratulations to Salmo Secondary who hosted the Kootenay Zone Championships where the Junior Boys qualified for provincials happening November 7, and where the L.V. Rogers Secondary Grizzlies qualified as well. Physical literacy is important for children across all grades in SD8. Well done to each student who has challenged themselves by participating in running and other sports throughout October.
Numeracy is another focus in November, and data from the Numeracy Continuous Learning Report shows primary students have strong number foundations. The focus turns now to intermediate math skills, closing gaps for Indigenous students and students with diverse abilities, and applying math to real life.
Congratulations as well to Grade 10 Leadership students at Kootenay River Secondary School who launched a school newspaper this past month, and to grade 11 and 12 students at Mount Sentinel Secondary whose 2026 films were screened in New York in mid-October. Career and post-secondary education plans often solidify as students see the possibilities of pursuing their passions as adults.
Enjoy this issue of the Superintendent's Report. Student reflections, skills, learnings, talents and celebration are featured in SD8 schools throughout the fall.
Warmly,
Trish
